Props for The Children's Place photoshoot

I made these cloud and heart pillows + soft cubes for The Children's Place SS18 Baby Bundle photoshoot. After being used as props, they are displayed at windows of one of their shops in Manhattan.

When it's slow, eat some sushi, feel better, and good things will come.

３月は忙しかったのに、最近はとんとオンラインショップのオーダーも入らず、やることが次から次へとある割に一つ一つがはかどらないような気がして、なんとなしにモヤッと晴れない気持ちのここ数日。

午前中、あまりにお腹が空いたので会社の用事で寄った紀伊国屋書店の２階の総菜屋で、ものすごく久しぶりにお寿司を買った。

おいしい。

お昼に持参していたお弁当と両方食べたら、元気でた。
そして席に戻ってメールをチェックしたら、オーダーが入っていた。


「継続は力なり」


聞き飽きたような言葉だけど、ふと思い出した。
仕事、やるべきこと、毎日の暮らし。ちょっと何かあったり（何もなかったり）しただけですぐに一喜一憂する自分に、たまには言い聞かせなければ。当たり前のことをコンスタントにしていく事が、本当はとても大切で、実は難しいことなんだと思った。

今日を丁寧に暮らしたことが、未来に力になることを願って。

Quietly Enthusiastic Day

今日は家で仕事なので、窓の外を眺めながらちゃぶ台でお昼。
風が強いみたいで、裏の家の向こうにある木の梢がゆれている。
青空の遠くの方にぼんやり白い点の飛行機が飛んでいるのが見える。
裏の家の向こうの木はずい分背が高くなった。
ここに越してからそろそろ５年が経つからなぁ。
私達の知らないところで、木も日々成長してるのね。

私が昨日オフィスに出ている間に主人が材料の麻布を全部洗濯しておいてくれたので、今日は他の仕事を朝からできた。布地は量があると結構重いしかさばるので、感謝。







私の仕入れている麻はヨーロッパで作られている。色つきの方は先染めで縦糸と横糸の色が違うせいで色に起伏というか微妙な色合いがあり、とても美しい。糊のついた真新しい状態だと、まるでシルクみたい。

買ったばかりの麻のハリと光沢のある感じも好きだけど、私の商品は子供用品や日用品になるので、まず洗って先に縮めます。こうしておけば、お客さんが洗った時に縮んで形が大幅にくずれたりすることを防げるから。でも、糊がとれてちょっとしわになった麻もラフでカジュアルな親しみやすさがあって好き。麻は大好きな素材です。

さ、今日は休憩もかねて、これからずっと作りたかったレモン・バーに挑戦。
仕事で座っていることが多いので、キッチンで動くのはいい気分転換なのです。
おいしく焼けるかな？

Leftovers

I've been making some pot holders using leftover fabric from my bib making. I love making use of things otherwise can be trashed. All you need is a little imagination to turn things into useful things for your life.

 

Talking of leftover, my standby lunch is often something I whip up from whatever I have in the kitchen, like the one in the photo at the bottom. In this, I topped rice with avocado slices, shredded chicken breast meat and nori seaweed, then drizzled it with Asian-inspired dressing I learned from a friend (I changed it a little). You can omit the chicken or add slices of abura-agé (fried tofu, available in Japanese grocery stores) - dry sautée it to make it crispy - to make it vegetarian.


Asian Dressing:

3 Tbsp.  soy sauce
3 Tbsp.  lemon juice
2 teasp.  finely chopped or minced ginger
2 teasp.  finely chopped or minced garlic
4-5 Tbsp.  oil (neutral flavored oil like canola, grapeseed, etc.)

This dressing goes well with salads, fish, chicken, and lean parts of pork.

Little tip on poaching chicken breast: Use a heavy duty pot with a lid like Le Cruiset, place the breasts in one part water & one part sake (so the chicken is barely covered) with some ginger slices & a stem of scallion. Cover and bring it to boil then lower heat to simmer for 20 min. Turn off heat and cool the chicken in the broth. I think sake & cooling the meat in its broth make the meat tender and moist. Serve with your favorite sauce or dressing. (Save the broth - it's a nice chicken stock - to use in soups.)

Last year just zoomed by for me - I thought we just had the corporate holiday party for year 2013 & 2014 came just like that. I guess I was busy.

Anyhow, wishing you all a very happy new year filled with fun, love, and good health!

この間、職場の忘年会があったような気がして、6月には仲間と「もう半年過ぎちゃったねェ。ヤダヤダ」なんて言ってたのもつかの間、１１月に入り「えぇーもう今年も後一ヶ月？」と思っているうちにあっけなく明けてしまった2013年。なんだかやけに早かった。家族に「充実してたんじゃない？」と言われたけど、果たしてそうなんだろうか。

とりあえず、家族全員が無事に過ごせたことに感謝して、今年もよい年でありますように。

皆様にとっても、健やかで楽しい一年となりますように！

On Making Things

While I am folding the fresh-out-of-dryer tee shirts, my brain changes its gear from 'park' to 'drive' and starts turning - coming up with colors to print on them and running many different simulations - different motifs and characters in different colors.

Some people think I just have ideas and turn them into shapes. It is true for some occasions; I come up with something and quickly jot them down on my sketchbook. But a lot of times, I don't really know what I am doing until my hands starts moving. Things start to take shape while I am cutting, touching fabric and other materials, looking at their colors, and doing something tedious and repetitive.

The making process generates creativity. Creativity can generate the making process. It's a two way road.

Finally, I washed my fabric & tee shirts and ironed the major wrinkles out.
Now I am ready to just cut, cut, and cut.

This process removes the starch from the fabric and makes it easier for the fabric inks to get absorbed into fibers. There are so many little steps like this one involved in making my bibs - and those less obvious steps makes the difference in the end products.

I love making stuff for my daughter's friends' birthdays. It's fun to think of the child and imagine how the garment will look on her/him while making it.

This one was made for Sophie whose birthday was last week.

parakeet pocket

This is a patchwork skirt in a sense as I made this connecting smallish fabric panels. Sometimes things get more interesting when you don't have enough fabric.

I had the skirt done and Kiliko suggested I print a pink parakeet on the pocket because her has a pet parakeet. Brilliant idea! It made it more fun and added a personal touch. She is already learning to design.

The other day when Kiliko had a playdate with her best friend at our home, she held a skirt I made for her and told her friend, "My mom made it. Nice design, huh?" Pretty good vocabulary for a 5-year-old!

たまには日記

年末にひどい風邪（多分インフルエンザ）にかかったせいで、雑事がたまりまくり、それを片付けながら新たな作品を制作していたら、１月はあっという間に過ぎ・・・

気づいたら２月。

今回はbibと共にbunNYをまとめて１２羽作ったのだけど、胴体に手をつける行程は手縫い。コーデュロイは硬いので、やり過ぎて危うく手首を痛めそうになった。やはりまとめて６羽くらいが丁度いい。

本日、主人はジャックと一緒にどこかのプロレス・イベントに出店＆プチ興行しているので私はおチビさんと二人きり。ゆっくり起きて、昨日仕事の合間に買っておいた日本の食パンで（ここがポイント）フレンチ・トーストを作って食べた。

フレンチ・トーストをほおばりながら、

「ねぇママ。どうしてキリがママのこと好きか知ってる？おいしいフード作ってくれるから」だって。たまには嬉しいこと言ってくれるじゃないの。

一日家じゃチビが退屈するのが目に見えているので、午前中から用事を片付けがてら出かけた。

近所の郵便局でhatchedの納品物郵送。

そのままUnion Sq.へ行き、ホールフーズで簡単にランチ。２階の食堂は総ガラス張りで眺めよし。母娘とも、行き交う人々を見ていて飽きない。

そして本日のお目当て、fishs eddy (フィッシュ・エディ)へ。

山積みになったかわいい食器やキッチン用品に囲まれて、まさに私はA kid in a candy store状態。一年前の娘だったら退屈していたろうけど、最近は女子化が進んで、彼女なりのお気に入りを見つけては報告してくれた。母娘で「アレいいね」「あ、これもカワイイ！」と会話も弾む。あー女の子ってやっぱりいい！

おまけに、ずっと探していたコップとガラスの保存容器も見つけた。娘も、彼女が一目惚れしたレトロな皿を買って大満足。

これが家に一つだけ割れずに残っていた

実は昨日、職場のキッチンで人のガラス器を割ってしまい、それがたまたまこのメーカーのだった。彼女のお気に入りだったし、悪いので同じのを購入しに行ったら、自分の方が楽しんでしまった。塞翁が馬。本当に、何がどうなるかなんてわからない。

花柄がなつかしいような、
東欧チックなような。

帰りはグリーンマーケットで新鮮なカブやらリンゴやらサイダー・ドーナツやらを買い、両手いっぱいの荷物で地下鉄に乗り込む。娘が大きくなったので、本当に外出は楽になった。

A New Kindergartner!

So my daughter started Kindergarten this week.

It is a big change for us tiny family.
After I sent her out on the first day, I really didn't know what to do with this LONG stretch of time. 7 hours without her!? I never had that much time for myself after she was born. Instead of laying back, I went crazy - cleaned the house, did the laundry, worked on my projects... but even after all that were done, it was ONLY 11:30 in the morning!?  Yes, the first day - and the rest of the week - was exhausting. Just felt so long.

After surfing some local stores and the internet (using this plenty of time) and had trouble finding a perfect backpack for my little kindergardener, I decided to make one from scratch.

Okay, let me admit it - it's not perfect - there is a big room for improvement as this is my first time designing a backpack and I learned a lot in the making process. But my daughter seem to like her first "big-girl-backpack" and it does look cute and is functional. I'm satisfied - for now.
