Our Okinawa trip

Hello! I took July off to spend some time with my family back in Tokyo, Japan.

This trip was a bit special as we decided to go to Okinawa, a group of small islands located in the very south end of Japan, close to Taiwan. (Usually I stay around Tokyo area.)

Okinawa used to be its own kingdom and has a very unique culture and language, nothing like the rest of Japan. We enjoyed swimming in the clear waters, the local food (Sohki soba—Okinawan noodle soup, sort of a cross between ramen and udon—is so delicious!), visited Shuri Castle, and my Mom and I challenged snorkeling for the first time and fed the tropical fish!

Live Painting @ Airbnb Press Dinner

In the end of February, Airbnb invited me to work as an on-site artist at their press dinner. I painted postcard-size watercolors from the media guests' vacation photos - it was challenging because of the number of pictures to be painted in the given time, but fun All the guests seemed very excited about having an artist paint from their photos live. Everyone was happy to bring home my paintings and it made me feel good. 

 

Above was my work desk of the night :) The event took place at the second floor event space of Haven's Kitchen in Chelsea. The staff was all very kind. I'd like to do a lunch sometimes.

The Bucket List Family—this amazing young family who travels around the globe—was the night's co-host and it was great to meet this adventurous couple and got to paint from one of their beautiful photos. I wish I had more time to talk to the interesting guests, most of them editors/writers; that is my only regret as I was too busy painting!

あけました

すこし遅ればせながら、

あけましておめでとうございます。

皆さんはどんな風に新年を迎えましたか？

私は娘と大晦日のほとんどを飛行機の中で過ごし、晦日の夕方にNYに到着、荷ほどきしたあと、時差で夜7時には就寝。明け方3時頃にやはり時差ボケの娘と起き出すというスタートでした。

12月はお休みをとり、ほとんどを東京の実家でのんびり過ごしてきました。といっても東京はなんとなく忙しい街、私も普段は時間がなくてなかなか行けないお医者さんを受診したり、買い物をしたり、人と会ったりしている内にあっという間に過ぎてしまいました。

去年は夏に帰れなかったので、心待ちにしていた帰国。冬に帰ったのは3年ぶりでしたが、猛暑の夏より外出が苦でなく、よかったです。

今回のハイライトは妹がお膳立てしてくれた小田原温泉旅行と家族揃ってのクリスマス。どちらも盛り上がりました。

 

でも、私にとって本当のハイライトは、たぶんいつも一緒。

それは、家族とのなんでもない時間です。

近所へ買い物に行く道のり。

台所で野菜を刻む母。

うす味の手作りのお惣菜。

食後にお茶をすすりながら母と妹とする四方山ばなし。

みんなでケチをつけながら観るテレビ。

ストーブの前でごろごろしながらする読書。

寝る前に妹とやるラジオ体操。

子供の頃は湯水のようにあったはずだった家族の時間は、いつの間にか帰省時だけの特別なものになってしまった。

本当は帰国前に早めに色々と予定を立てておくのが賢いんだろうな。

だけど、予定を詰め込むとそんな時間が減ってしまいそうで、結局バタバタ忙しくなるのに、いつもギリギリまで友達にも連絡をしない。

「えー帰国してたんだ！早く言ってくれりゃいいのに！」って言われるの覚悟で。

なので、心ひろき我が友たちよ、また次もきっと突然電話すると思うのだけど、会ってもらえたら嬉しいです。

私たちの新たな一年が、健やかでよきモノとなりますよう。

Little trip to upstate

メモリアル・デーの三連休は、NY市から北へ2時間程車を走らせたアコードという町にある、娘と私の仲良しのお友達の別荘へ遊びに行ってきました。

緑と新鮮な空気、お日様の光、雨の恵み、のんびりしたつかの間の田舎暮らしを満喫。先月は日本にいる家族の病気など、プライベートで不安な局面が多々あり気持ちが塞ぎがちだったので、よい気分転換になりました

金曜の夜にNYを出発し深夜に到着。

仲良しと一緒のうれしさに興奮した娘は車の中でずーーっと大声でじゃべくり続けていた。

土曜の朝のお話タイム。

晴れ間に滝を求めて、森の中を散策。
新緑がきれい。

土曜午前は森を散策、お目当ての滝は見つからなかったけど、明るい新緑のなんと清々しいこと！崖っぷちを歩いたり、ちょっとした冒険も。

お昼の後も子ども達は遊び続けていたけど、お母さん二人は疲れてお昼寝。

夕方に車で地元のスーパーでの買い出しなどして、夜はバーベキュー。

それにしても、地元のお店はどこもこぢんまりしていて、いちいちかわいい。

遊び疲れて子ども達は車で撃沈。

雨で濡れた地面から立ちこめた靄が幻想的。

日曜ものんびり気ままな時間に起きて、お友達の作ったチーズ・オムレツとトーストとお茶をベランダで。青い空にぽっかり浮かんだ白い雲がカタチを変えてゆく様を見ながら食べる朝ご飯の、なんて贅沢なこと！

午前はお友達が草刈りしている間に、私は子供達と近所に飼われているロバにニンジンをやりに行った。道草しながら帰宅した後は、私は家の中でナンプレにじっくり取り組む。子どもが勝手に遊んでいられるお庭がある生活って素敵だよなー。

日曜はお昼も外で。

そんなこんなであっという間の滞在でした。
忙しない都市の生活も楽しいけれど、こういうのどかな時間ももっと大切にしなくては、と思った週末でした。

Back to NY

夏休みを終えて、一昨日からまたNY。
夢から醒めたような、別の夢を見続けているような、不思議な気持。


東京では家族や仲良しの友達に会えて、楽しく目まぐるしい日々だったなぁ。
少しずつ、その時のことも書きたいと思います。


こちらに帰った翌日からバイト。
昨日は持ちこたえたものの、今日は本当に起きたまま寝ていたようで、ちゃんと仕事を終えて帰路につけたのが不思議なくらい。あまりよく覚えてないけど、間抜けなことをしていた気がする。１１時過ぎ帰宅。


もう今日は寝ようっと。
おやすみなさい。

Trip to Accord

My good friend Kazuki, her daughter Kharin (also good friend of my daughter), and two of us went for a weekend trip to their "mansion" in the country side.

Since we don't have a car, we rarely get out of the city and it was so nice to breathe the fresh air and also learn how Kazuki, a super-busy designer/shop-owner of babyNOIR and a mom, rewinds herself. 


Looking at the trees and plants, clouds moving, biting into simple food, meeting new people... all were inspiration. And of course, the best part was to be with two smiley children (most of the time) with messy hair in the spring breeze.

End of Summer

予報を見ても、もう30度を超える日はない。

朝晩は涼しいし、夏が遠のいていく感つよし。

つかの間の田舎暮らしを思い出しながら、慌ただしい都会の生活に埋没してゆく日々。
