Shop Window at DaVinci Artist Supply in Chelsea: Now – Feb. 24

Happy New Year! ... It's late, but better than never.

For email/SNS new year greetings, I made this watercolor of running boars as it is the year of the boar (the pig in China), out of the twelve Asian zodiac signs.

This led me to design the shop window of DaVinci Artist Supply—a local art supply store I frequent because I love their range and the helpful staff—for their Winter Back to School Sale, which has been quite exciting.

A big thank you to Mark, who is in charge of marketing/promotion/design at the shop, who invited me and helped me throughout this process! He and I became friends last year or so while chatting about Japan and kendo. (I used to practice kendo waaay back when.) He is also a swordsman at Kenzen Institute who obtains the forth dan, and a talented representational painter. You can take a look at his work on his Facebook.

Group Show at the Consulate General of Japan in New York

I will be showing one of my paintings alongside a group of wonderful local artists at a gallery inside the Consulate General of Japan in New York from Dec. 4-19. If you're in Midtown, please stop by!

Group Show in Union Square

I will have a few new paintings in a group show in Union Square next month.

This year, a textile exhibition—of newly innovated sustainable fabric made from Kudzu plant—will be held by a group of students from Tama Art University (Tokyo, Japan; the art school I attended before coming to the US) at the same time.

This month, I've been going to the MET every week to polish up my observational drawing skills. I like drawing people thus drawing from statues is a great practice. The MET has a vast collection from all over the world and is a perfect place to do that.

I am excited that Sam, my good friend and one of the most talented & skilled artists I know, will be joining me to draw next time! We went to the MET yesterday to see the Heavenly Bodies exhibit together and it was so much fun. I love Sam's attention to details and her passion to study the craftsmanship. And I can never get enough of her charming British accent and her unique sense of humor! You can see Sam's amazing portfolio here.

Kaiju Big Battel in Queens

We finished another successful Kaiju show at La Boom in Sunnyside, Queens.

For those who doesn't know, Kaiju Big Battel is a monster fighting spectacle my partner Randy has been doing for 20 years. Randy also has been doing a fundraising show for NYC public schools since 2 years ago with a help from Tara Altebrando, my friend, a NYC parent, and a writer.

This time it was a fundraiser for three Queens charter schools: Our World Neighborhood Charter School, Academy of the City, and Growing Up Green! We donated 100 tickets to each school and tickets were sold out! That's 300 people right there and Randy also sold his own tickets to the public so we had about 700+ loud audience!

Big thanks to my friends Kazuki and Michelle for helping me with the merch table! You guys make the best team!!

Props for The Children's Place photoshoot

I made these cloud and heart pillows + soft cubes for The Children's Place SS18 Baby Bundle photoshoot. After being used as props, they are displayed at windows of one of their shops in Manhattan.

Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between

メトロポリタン美術館で春から開催されている、川久保玲／コムデギャルソンの展示。9月4日でおしまいということで、友人のサムと一緒に平日火曜の朝一番で観てきた。

"Art of the In-Between"というタイトルが示す通り、しばしば対極とされているもの（自／他、存在／不在、事実／フィクション、戦争／平和等）をペアにしたテーマごと6〜7着の服がグループ別に、真っ白いギャラリーのような、青山のコムのショップも少し彷彿とさせる空間に展示されている。服はどれも強烈で、飾られているというよりもそこに「立っている」ような気配すらした。

日本特有の「間」や「無」等についてもパンフレットに説明があり、一昔前ならよほど東洋の文化や精神世界に興味のある極少数の欧米人以外には理解される事もなかったであろうコンセプトを題材に、かのメトロポリタン美術館で日本人の創作が展示されるようになったのは感慨深い。

ただ、結局「二極の中間」という表現でしか理解を得られないのは残念な気もする。二つの相反するものが一つのもの（人）の中に同時に存在すること、「間」は英語の"void"や単なる"space"ではなく「間」として存在することを日本人と同じ感覚で欧米人が理解するのには、まだまだ時間がかかるのかもしれない。しかし英語の構造や語彙を考えると、このタイトルは絶妙とも言えるし、日本文化に疎い人々が無形の日本的なコンセプトを理解するのには良いとっかかりになるに違いない。

日本のことばかり話したが、川久保玲の服はとても西洋的、いや西洋そのものだ。彼女のクリエーションはあくまでも「洋服」である。が、その洋服は東洋の精神と美意識を内包している。欧米のデザイナーが「日本」を取り入れる時、それはただ日本のデザインの表層をなぞったものに過ぎない。本質は「洋服」でそこに日本的な合わせの要素や着物風の柄を取り入れるのである。それは彼らは強固な「個」を持っており、それは他文化に触れたからといって、中々ゆるぐようなものでないのだ。しかし、日本人の精神構造は欧米人のそれとは違う。川久保は自分の中に西洋と東洋を同時に存在させることができ、これらはそれゆえに生まれたクリエーションだと思う。西洋の要素がベースになければ、NYのメットでの展示などは実現しなかったであろう。その東西の要素が並列にある融通無礙な表現は西洋人にはできない事で、それが異様でもあり、きっと見るものを惹きつけるのだ。

英語での論理的な説明も手伝って、川久保はこちらではコンセプチュアルなデザイナーという評判が主流だが、実際に見てとても感覚的な仕事だと個人的には思った。洋服の形に深い理解のある彼女だからこその遊び心が見え隠れしていた。そんな詩的な部分も感じ取っている欧米のジャーナリストもいるようで、こんな展示が今後の欧米社会にどんな影響を与えていくのかが楽しみである。

　　

 

Live Painting @ Airbnb Press Dinner

In the end of February, Airbnb invited me to work as an on-site artist at their press dinner. I painted postcard-size watercolors from the media guests' vacation photos - it was challenging because of the number of pictures to be painted in the given time, but fun All the guests seemed very excited about having an artist paint from their photos live. Everyone was happy to bring home my paintings and it made me feel good. 

 

Above was my work desk of the night :) The event took place at the second floor event space of Haven's Kitchen in Chelsea. The staff was all very kind. I'd like to do a lunch sometimes.

The Bucket List Family—this amazing young family who travels around the globe—was the night's co-host and it was great to meet this adventurous couple and got to paint from one of their beautiful photos. I wish I had more time to talk to the interesting guests, most of them editors/writers; that is my only regret as I was too busy painting!

ぬか床が酸っぱい

日本にいる間は主人がかき混ぜてくれていたぬか床。
久々に野菜を漬けたら、かなり酸っぱい！

早速ネットで調べると、酸味が強いのは乳酸菌が過剰繁殖しているそう。
別に害はないけど、好みもあるので以下酸味を抑えるもの：

①塩
②粉辛子
③唐辛子

そして、乳酸菌は空気が嫌いなので、手入れの回数を増やし、上下をしっかり返すとのこと。

とりあえず近所の韓国系スーパーで見つけた粉辛子と塩をいくらか足す。
ついでに屠蘇散の出しがらの紙パックの中身も水気を絞って入れてみた。山椒果皮、桔梗根、陳皮・・・など体に良さそうなものばかりだったから。

おいしくなりますように。

中国系スーパーで見つけられるはず。

新年

12月初めからの3週間の東京滞在は慌ただしく幕を閉じ、昨日またこちらへ戻ってきた。

大晦日の夜に日本を出て、大晦日の夜にNYに着いた。

友人がJFK国際空港まで車で迎えにきてくれ助かった。

アパートに着いてすぐ、娘と荷ほどきし、お土産などを主人に渡したり見せたり。

主人の作っておいてくれた物で簡単な夕食にして、時差や疲れで皆早々に布団に入った。

夜中、遠くから花火の音がした

大晦日の真夜中はいつも不思議だ

年に一度、それまでは今年なのに一秒を境に新しい年になる瞬間

いつもと変わらないようでいて

どこか知らない

世界の奥の方でなにか大きなものがゴトリと動いて

色々なことが今までと違う方向を向く

あけましておめでとうございます。

チェルシー

めっきり寒くなった。
ハロウィーンが近づくと、急にニューヨークは冷え込む。

11月は今までできていなかった家のことやEtsyの店の物撮りや整理をしよう。

昨日はキリコと二人でチェルシーからユニオン・スクエアを散策。
女二人で気楽な外出。

このカフェのラテ、おいしかった。

窓に張り付くように階段。不思議。

1日中、ヒーロー・マントを颯爽と羽織っていた娘。
ヒーローはすべり台がお好き。

あれだけ歩いた 後も公園で走り回る。

今日の色あい

午前中から韓国のオンライン・ショップからの注文品を制作。

去年もこのくらいの時期にどーんと発注してくれた。

注文の品をプリントし終わった後、いつも余ったインクでちょっと遊ぶ。

実験は楽しい。

これが今日の実験。

今グッとくる色合いはこんな感じ。
やさしい色。

今年の夏の目標は、Photoshopで一つパターンを完成させること。

本当はアナログに布にプリントしている時が一番楽しいのだけど、デザインに幅を出したいので、既存のモチーフを使いとりあえず一つは作ってみたい。

娘は今日初めて近くのサマーキャンプへ。

サマーキャンプは今夏初めて参加させてみた。

キャンプと言っても、ここは昼間だけ。共働きの親が多いアメリカでは、夏休みに子供をどうするかは課題。このキャンプは普段は放課後の学童保育をしている施設で、夏季は午前8時〜午後5時まで子供を預かって、プールや工作、外遊びなどをさせてくれる。うちは夏は主人が割と暇だけど、夫婦でフリーランスの身、いつ何時忙しくなるかわからない＋近くにヘルプを頼める実家もないので、夏の間なら平日いつでも使える10日間パックに申し込んでおいた。

施設まで送って別れる時は緊張した面持ちで「いってらっしゃい！」と声をかけても無言で今にも泣き出しそうな顔だったが、笑顔で帰宅。主人が早めにお迎えに行ったのが気に食わなかったよう、「明日は最後まで残る！」と豪語していた。お友達もできたけど、名前は知らないそう。

一瞬晴れ間を見たものの、夜はまた雨。

つめたい春

今日、仕事帰りの空。

風が吹いたら高い梢がいっせいにゆれた。

冷たいけど春の風。

この間まで蕾だったマグノリアも満開。

今年の春は寒いせいか、花の息が長い気がする。

今日も寒く、チューリップはみんな閉じていた。

先日のデッサン教室で出したモチーフを、自分も生徒さんが帰った後、描いてみた。

久々に長い時間をかけて、丁寧に描いた。

デッサンは発見が多い。

思い込みを捨てて見るままに描くと、

いつの間にか平面上に架空の空間ができてくる。

「見えたまま」に描きながら、絵の中でのリアリテイも追求する。

そんな工程を交互にくり返す。

デッサンは、その人特有の世界の見え方なのだ。
